Western Vic JOTA/JOTI 2016 Report
The annual Jamboree On The Air and Internet, JOTA and JOTI, has passed for another year. We at Western Victoria JOTA/JOTI had a blast! Amateur Radio bands were in good condition, we contacted 170 stations on JOTI, and Scouts had a great time at our activities such as geocaching, fox hunting, radio orienteering and kit building to name a few.
The tally closed at 115 Scouts and Leaders who made their way to the Cooinda Burrong Scout Camp in the Grampians. For our beloved Warrnambool and Portland Groups, the 3 hour long trek to the camp has become an annual tradition, followed closely by those from Wendouree, Timboon, Cobden and Hamilton. Combine this with our more local groups; Kaniva, Warracknabeal and Horsham and the result is nothing short of a fun packed weekend. So much so, that even our State Commissioner for Scouts, Michael Thomas and our Region Commissioner, Neil Hunt joined in!
This year was the 10th year of JOTA at Cooinda Burrong and we are so happy with the decade which it was. As well as the countless hours spent by the wonderful JOTA team, we credit the success of our camp over these years to the Groups who have attended. Be you a Scout, Leader, parent helper or anyone in between, our event is designed to be an opportunity to socialise, network and make new friends.
We see JOTA as a unique oportunity to link the developing world of exciting technology with the traditional values of Scouting. Besides exposing youth to the international community of Scouting, which is fundamentally what JOTA/JOTI is about, our program also provides a broad range of challenging activties with a focus on technology. We believe that the JOTA/JOTI is a unique event on the Scouting calendar to provide this style of activities and therefore we encourage all groups to include JOTA/JOTI in their yearly program.
It's no lie when I say that our plans are underway for an improved and refreshed event in 2017 and we invite anyone to join us! Or, if a weekend spent in the glorious Grampians is out of reach for your Group, we encourage you to find or run a JOTA station nearby you.
Save the date: JOTA/JOTI 20th-22nd October 2017!
Yours in Scouting,
Western Victoria JOTA/JOTI Team
